Adavarre' Rahndi

Adavarre', also known as Varre', is a young Daliwakan woman, a geologist by training on Daliwaka, who was brought to Oonah Lotmah, as a Klingon slave, to work in the laboratory for the Mining Operation. She served as a slave for 6 years before Starfleet liberated the Daliwakan in the Gamma Sagittarii system. She is lively and intelligent, and growing into a leadership role among her Dali people and the New Darwin Colony community as a whole. She has achieved a civilian 'rank' of CE-24, which is equivalent to a Fleet rank of LtCmdr, though she has no line of command authority over Fleet personnel.

Physical Characteristics

She is small boned, very slender, small breasts and narrow hips make for a boyish figure, but very delicate. Her hair is long and straight and she often coils it in a figure-eight behind her head with a barrette. Her skin is a light warm golden tan. Some might call her plain because her hair and clothing are very simple and she does not use cosmetics of any kind. She generally wears tan light-weight canvas pants, a soft cotton-like fabric shirt in russet or blue, oversized and blousy. Knee high dark brown “riding” boots.

Personality

Varre' is perpetually cheerful and optimistic, in spite of a suspicious curiosity. She is not afraid to ask questions and she deeply wants to understand things. While this is a plus for her as a scientist, she also questions why she is being asked, or ordered, to do something or wants to know more about a situation than may be appropriate for her to know. For this reason, she often incurs the frustration of her superiors. However, as the colony staff become more acquainted with her, they will come to value her pointed curiosity and find it often illuminates the situation.

Physically, she is unnaturally graceful to the point of being conspicuous in her movements. It is not the usual sensual feminine grace, but a quality of strength and controlled energy like that of a dancer. Basically shy, she does not like to call attention to herself and in most cases is unaware that her movement is indeed conspicuous.

She is soft-spoken, with a light, melodic cadence in her speech. The Daliwakan dialect of the region where she grew up was characterized by placing the accent on multi-syllable words on the final syllable, and this accent continues in her pronunciation of many English words as she learns the language. She is very keen on learning English, even though she sometimes misuses words or phrases.

Because she appears slight and boyish, others might assume she is immature or naïve and may fail to take her seriously. This would a mistake, for she is indeed very intelligent and capable. To make up her physical stature, she is known to resort to being verbally and physically aggressive when aroused or angered. This quality often led to her being baited by her Klingon overseers, as they thought her show of anger to be quite amusing. She is now very wary of being teased, finding it hard to tell the difference between jovial human joking and intentionally cruel humiliation.

Biography

Family and Early Life

Varre' was born on Daliwaka to Dallis Rahndi, a miner, and Minet Rahndi, a clerical/office worker in the Klingon mining office, in the Earth year 2131. She has two older brothers, ages 27 and 30. She attended school beginning at age 5 (2136) and following her 10 th year (2146), entered higher educational school (college or university), focusing on specialized training in the field of geology, with an emphasis in gemmology and metals. She also has a solid education and expertise in the field of zoology and animal behaviour and has made significant studies of the animal life on Daliwaka (and more recently on Gamma Sagittarii II).

Upon graduation in 2151, she was sent to work in the mining industry on Gamma Sagittarii II, as a gemmologist, primarily identifying, categorizing and preparing precious minerals for commercial trade. And the Klingons also made use of her zoological expertise in identifying, cataloguing, and characterizing the local fauna on the Colony planet. Through her work, a number of different species were found to be useful in a more or less domestic capacity in the agricultural industry of the Colony. Her competence in both gemmology and zoology led to the grudging, but serious, respect of her Klingon overseers and she was rewarded with considerable freedom. To Starfleet, she will be a valuable source of local scientific knowledge: geological, biological and agricultural.

Personal History

Varre' lived a very sheltered life, particularly after the Klingons took control of Daliwaka. Though she was very young at the time, her parents chose to shield her from as much of the occupation as possible. She enjoyed school from the very first day and was a particularly eager student. Her weakness was mathematics and she had to really struggle to master this discipline as her interests took her more and more in the direction of a scientific career. Her desire to satisfy her endless curiosity began early in her schooling. She had the reputation of making superior grades and being well-liked by her peers, though tended to be a bit of a free spirit and loner. She enjoyed spending her free time exploring the countryside, sketching plants and animals and writing imaginative adventure stories. She was physically active and healthy. Her 16 years of school were not particularly exciting, though there are scattered reports of mischievous behaviour. However, her move to Gamma Sagittarii II was an unbelievable awakening for her. Her parents had done an effective job of sheltering her from the realities of the Klingon occupation. Suddenly, she was surrounded by the Klingon culture and aware of the sore oppression of her people. Also, she had only been vaguely aware of the realities and extent of space travel until her transfer to the Colony. She first was very frightened by her trip, and that fear gradually turned to fascination of primarily of a spiritual, ethereal, and philosophic nature, though the actual experience of space travel was a marvel as well. This deep inner reality became a great comfort to her when faced with the struggles of life as basically slave labour.

She was initially, and remained, very frightened of her Klingon overseers. She quickly learned that showing that fear only challenged further assaults, and became practiced at hiding her emotions most of the time. However, inside she felt hollow and exposed in their presence.

Her experience with men in general has often been violent. Her father was an unhappy man who frequently drank spirits and became violent, particularly toward her oldest brother. Her experience of intimate relations is also coloured by violation. She was raped during her time at university; the perpetrator being a Daliwakan professor. In addition, she was sorely mistreated by one of her Klingon supervisors shortly after arriving on Gamma Sagittarii.

For approximately 4 years, Varre' had a very serious romantic relationship with another Daliwakan worker, Dakova Marok. They were considered “intended,” desiring to marry, but the Klingon's did not permit public unions among the Daliwakans. Before they were able to make a public declaration and abbreviated ceremony outside Klingon knowledge, tragedy struck. A year before Starfleet liberated the Colony, Dakova had gotten crosswise with one of the Klingon supervisors in the agricultural development where Dakova had worked as a mechanical specialist. Every Daliwakan involved in that division knew Dakova's “accidental” death was deftly arranged by Nok Forr.

Hobbies

She is very adept in handling creatures, both wild and domestic. She spends most of her free time exploring & hiking, looking for, studying and sketching animals.

Varre's animal companion: Koqui' accompanies her everywhere like a shadow, but is so inconspicuous, he often goes unnoticed. Varre' does not consider him to be a pet, but a companion. He is known as a vol'sha and is indigenous to Gamma Sagittarii II. He looks something like a stocky cat, weighing perhaps 10 lbs, but has more the companionship qualities of a dog. His mottled gold fur is thick and soft, but a slightly oily quality resists water and the tangle of brush and thistles. His tail is longer in relationship to the rest of his body than a domestic Earth cat. The hair on his tail is long and thick, and of a coarser texture than his body. He carries it flipped up and over his back. His head is large and round, with a short muzzle and his ears are oversized, the very tips of which drop forward. His rusty colour eyes are also large and round and appear to be one solid colour without an iris. He is very swift afoot and more intelligent than a dog. He is very loyal, but not so courageous and aggressively protective as a dog. He never makes a sound when out and about with Varre'. Most people assume he is voiceless. However, he does make soft croaking sounds, rather like a night frog. When extremely frightened or injured, he can emit an amazingly loud, high pitched screech.

There are many feral colonies of vol'sha in the region of the Colony. Like feral cats, they are elusive and shy, but very effective hunters. Much of their prey consists of rodent-like creatures that are destructive of agricultural crops and stored foods as well, so they welcome cohabitants of the Colony.
