History
Development
While still under construction in space dock, the Yorktown suffered her first casualty. Captain Rod Berry, the first Commanding Officer, and Lieutenant Marjel, Exobiologist, were killed in a freak explosion of the shuttle pod they were on while making their final approach to the Yorktown. Initial investigation points to signs of a potential temporal anomaly as the cause, but nothing is certain.
Launch and early missions (2152)
After the tragic death of Capt. Berry, Captain L. Horatio Hawke took over as Commanding Officer. Despite the difficult circumstances, the Yorktown launched for her initial shakedown mission on 24 March 2152. With a brief shakedown complete, the Yorktown was assigned to escort Earth envoy, Adm. Gibley (Ret'd.), to the recently discovered habited star system Mizar in order to establish diplomatic relations. While in orbit, the Yorktown encounters some neighbourhood thugs in the Orions, who attempt to extort a "tribute" from the local Mizarians. After a brief battle against the more advanced Orions, the Yorktown manages to drive the local bullies away, but at the cost of several lives.
While conducting some brief R&R in addition to crew transfers and ship repairs and refitting at Jupiter Station, the Yorktown crew encounters an Andorian diplomatic delegation. Tensions, already strained, run even higher after a serious explosion near Jupiter Station's reactor core. Careful investigation reveals evidence of a mysterious third party attempting to influence the talks between Earth and Andoria, with the apparent assistance of Andorian Ambassador Th'Lev. Under emergency power due to the station's explosion, Yorktown moves off to a defensive position against the Andorian ship in another tense stand off. Just as events come to a head, a strange anomaly appears and, in daring fashion, Ambassador Th'Lev escapes. Underpowered, the Yorktown is unable to follow and Capt. Hawke orders a return to Jupiter Station after scans are taken of the anomaly.
With repairs and refits complete, Capt. Hawke receives word from Starfleet that a five year deep space mission has been approved. Their first goal is a survey of the Wolf 359 system. While enroute, Chief Armoury Officer Lt. (j.g) Mick Thompson requests a moment to test the Yorktown's weapons systems. Although the test is successful, an alien vessel unknown to Starfleet (later identified as the "zGilibhuoplptz") is damaged as a result. Yorktown's crew attempts to render assistance, but those efforts are hampered by barriers in language, strange advanced technology, and a bit of xenophobia on the part of these unlucky aliens - the zGillibians. The situation only worsens when two other ships appear on sensors. One, the transport ship Northstar, is attacked by the other, which immediately cloaks after destroying the transport. Spooked, the aliens are reassured by Capt. Hawke that the Yorktown will defend them both. With a combined tactical effort, the Yorktown and zGilibhuoplptz hold their ground against the enemy, now identified as the race that destroyed at least two races, including the zGillibians, over 300 years previous. After updating Starfleet Command, the NX-08 Trope is dispatched to assist defending the zGillibians. With three ships to the enemy's one, the new allies attempt to capture the lone enemy ship. After heavy battle damage and repelling boarders, the Yorktown, Trope and zGilibhuoplptz managed to destroy the enemy. Despite the success of their new cooperation, the zGillibians demand all knowledge of their existence be erased and held to the highest level of secrecy in exchange for allowing the two Starfleet vessels to leave freely. Capt. Hawke reluctantly agrees.
