Biography

Ed was born Oct 19, 2126 to Second Generation Irish Immigrants (Mathew Sean McWilliams and Kelly Elizabeth Finley-McWilliams) in Worcester, MA. He has 3 Sisters (Gwendolyn Kiley - 32, Christine Shea - 26, and Maureen Emily - 24) and 1 Brother (Morgan Eamon (Fraternal Twin to Maureen Emily) - 24).

Growing up, Ed‘s Father dealt primarily with Demolition work of aging building. On a few occasions, Mathew Sean allowed his son to 'tag along' on a few of the Job Sites and observe the process from a safe distance. Ed began his life studying the effects of explosives on structures, but eventually (with the introduction of Transport Technology in the use of dismantling outdated buildings) decided that the field of work did not interest him.

His mother primarily dealt with volunteer work in the local town setting. However, with the large family lifestyle, Kelly spent a great deal of time with her family and was primarily a Stay at Home mother. But due to this (As Ed credits), he grew up learning much about the importance of family and Volunteer work. He often gives time, when available, to the latter. At the age of 18, he joined Becker College. He attended this institution until May 21, 2152 where he obtained degrees in both Starship/Space Station Electrical Studies and Warp Field Application.

Immediately he enlisted with Starfleet Academy and was accepted June 12, 2152. However, there was an approximate 3 weeks off from his studies at Starfleet when his cousin, Jennifer Finley, was killed during the Xindi attack April 24, 2153. After his time of grieving, he returned to Starfleet to continue his training.

Edward graduated Starfleet Academy March 31, 2156 at the rank of Ensign, although with some debate as to his assignment. During the Training exercise, Ed had used questionable tactics concerning a situation with the Atlantis' Warp Engine, and concerns were expressed as to any future associations Ed should have in this department. After a brief point of consideration, Ed McWilliams was assigned to Forrest Outpost: April 14, 2156.

Ed's service aboard Forrest Outpost was normal and standard until a brief reassignment to Galad 2: where Ed participated in an Archeological Expedition that was underway. During that excavation, Forrest Outpost came under attack by Nausicaan Vessels (it was later discovered that these vessels were operated by Klingons linked with attacks on several Starfleet entities). The ESS Freedom was recalled back to Forrest Outpost to assist in repelling the invaders.

During that battle, Ed worked in a successful manner for assuming command of Engineering (after the Chief Engineer was called to the bridge to assume Command duties). In part of his duties, he developed a plan to directly help in saving the Freedom. Due to this action, he was awarded both the Bronze Starfleet Cross and Preantares Ribbon of Commendation, Second Class for his efforts.

One area that greatly impacted Ed’s later decision to leave Starfleet temporarily dealt, however, with a number of deaths suffered during the battle (a number occurring within Engineering). Due to the intersection of these losses with the same event he was awarded, he blamed himself - believing that his idea was the direct cause in these peoples’ deaths. This greatly affected his personality - creating intense bouts of anger. This problem was only complicated upon the learning of his father’s death.

On Nov 07, 2156, Ed resigned his position aboard Forrest Outpost under a Leave of Absence request, and left the Station the same day.

Ed McWilliams did not return to Active Service until May 18, 2157 - where he had learned (through secure channels) of the possibility that a Klingon Strike Force was heading toward Earth. Wishing to assist in the possible military actions, Ed immediately returned to Starfleet Command and requested immediate assignment.

Ed was placed to the service of ESS Yorktown, and was reinstated to Lieutenant (jg). Due to both his rank and previous experience in Battle of Forrest Outpost, it was decided (after confirmation with Lt Commander Rece Morgan: Yorktown Commanding Officer) for Ed to be placed as the Assistant Chief Engineering Officer.
