Slender, Athletic, Energetic, Boyish
In spite of an energetic spirit, a certain defiance in the face of her brother, and being a acknowledged brilliant student, Emily is quite down to earth. She is often quiet and reflective, while her outward persona is definitely friendly, poised and articulate. She is hardworking, dedicated and loyal. She is not a hot-shot or overly impulsive individual, though she can be stubborn in backing things she believes in, whether that be people or ideas. She is teachable and curious, eager to please, but not to the point of being a door-mat. She is a capable leader, and if no one else will take the responsibility of making a decision, she will step up and do it. She is frustrated by small mindedness, petty argument, and impatient with ineptitude, her own as well as others. She is bored to tears by pointless conversation, incessant chatter, arrogance, and slapstick humor. She enjoys hearing the stories of 'old timers' and 'sitting at the feet' of experts in just about any field learning one on one.
She is capable of hot spurts of anger but it is usually for good reason and not just a cocky response to challenge. Cool under pressure, she is not easily intimidated, but also unlikely to take unnecessary, unconsidered risks. She has a fine example in her brother to follow, and by her own admission, she will make a good officer someday, and that is her goal.
Emily Ann Garroway was born on the Earth colony of Terra Proxy. Once a small, new colony Terra Proxy has grown into a major community, where her father, an agricultural engineer, served as former colony governor, until his death in 2154, when Emily was 15.
On Terra Proxy, education is handled independently of Earth standards, and indeed in general exceeds Earth standard. Schooling for children over the age of 10, is a year round, full-time enterprise. By the age of 16, students are directed into more specialized schools. One option is a junior university setting for a year earning an associates degree in a general field of study. Other options would direct students interested in a Technical, Scientific, Engineering, or Medical field to attend schools focusing in that direction; or a Vocational College if it was not their intention to go into a specialized scientific, medical, teaching, socio/economic, etc, or engineering type career. Accelerated programs in such a self-sufficient colony are the norm, and 'in-field' work-study programs are very common. Thus, by age 17-18, most students are well into their advanced studies, with considerable hands-on, empirical experience to back up the academics.
Emily Garroway is the daughter of an Agricultural Engineer and a nurse who holds a specialty in exo-biology. While showing promise in a wide variety of specialties, Emily's interest in alien society and history seemed to make most sense, and she proceeded in a Scientific direction, with an interest in societies, cultures, anthropology and in particular archeology. She attended all of her schooling on Terra Proxy, until applying to Starfleet Academy. She was quickly accepted into a progressive trial program of fast-tracking exceptional students in certain fields into on-the-job officer's training after a specialized Basic Physical, Protocol and Technological Training regimen lasting several months.
Her brother, Thomas Garroway was primed early for a life of flying. Despite his father's disagreement, Thomas joined Starfleet and began a distinguished career. In a similar fashion, Emily has dreamed of following her brother into Starfleet despite his considered and determined objections.
Thus began a serious power struggle between the younger sister and her brother. Garroway joined the Fleet in October of 2152, just before Emily's 13th birthday in November of that year. His own experiences have taught him this is no life for a child. Emily feels the burden of proving that not only is she no longer the child that he remembers leaving, but that she is a woman with her own mind, her own heart, and her own destiny, not just Rear Admiral Thomas Garroway's little sister.
Emily is quite defiant in the face of her brother's disapproval, but she is young, a bit naïve, and very much seeks his approval. She is very teachable, and will make some willing mentor or guide an adept and devoted protégé. She is self-conscious that her older brother is the Rear Admiral, and has already encountered some painful ramifications of that by way of accusations by fellow students at the Academy that she may have been the recipient of preferential treatment.
As bright and promising as she is, it is not easy to follow in the footsteps of an older brother who is now a Rear Admiral and basically in charge of the Fleet, at the beginning of a declared war by what has proven to be a formidable enemy, the Romulan Empire.
Architecture, archery, violin, 19th c fine art painting and poetry. Emily has a cat, named Charlie Goldenboy. It has been very hard for her to part with him. As a substitute, she has a golden teddybear, named Charlie, and a hand-written diary entitled 'Notes to My Goldenboy.'
